The Dodger’s Maury Wills slides into the record books!!
The throw to Dal Maxvill at second base from Card’s catcher Gene Oliver is too late…and the Dodger’s Maury Wills is safe…and it’s stolen base number 97 to break the single season record of Ty Cobb set back in 1915. This action from September of 1962 at Busch Stadium was typical of the excitement in the 60′s whenever the guys in blue and red from L-A came to town.
But whoooaa, wait just one minute!!
Things didn’t come quite so easy for the Dodgers later that month and in early October of ’62…leading by 4 games with only 7 to play, they faltered at the end, lost three straight to the Cardinals in LA to end the season, and were forced to play a best of three playoff against their other arch rivals, the San Francisco Giants, to decide the NL Pennant. With the series tied at a game apiece, the deciding game was in Los Angeles on October 3rd…here Tommy Davis of the Dodgers swings away in the 6th inning of game three, won by the Giants 6-4…giving the pennant to Mays and company…
